Square dancing is great fun and exercise. But it can also be a way to give back to the community. The Orange Blossom Specials, a dedicated group of Orange Blossom Squares dancers, provides demonstrations at a variety of venues.
One venue is nursing homes and retirement centers, and in the past, part of a demonstration in that setting included providing one of the residents with a beautiful handmade afghan crocheted by Roberta Troop, a former member of the Specials with her husband, Bruce.
The Specials began giving away an afghan with each performance when Bruce came up with the idea in 2003. Roberta was there to support his idea with her talent and time, fashioning over 500 afgans! Roberta thought of it as more than a hobby; it was a calling.
Roberta is no longer with us but memory of her efforts and kindness lives on in the pleasure she brought to so many over the years.
Bruce and Roberta present an afghan to a lucky recipient.
Another happy recipient, Penny, presented by Fran & Ed Garguila.
